Telecom RAN Landscape

4G is more than enough for all apps of today.
No use case for URLLC.

Now CBRS introduce in 5g as well for this reason
Rakuten network may change telecomm landscape …how aggressive they are working
Setting new milestones every month new innovations, O-RAN ,new vendors.

In OMDIA report, the enterprises are expected to pay most of the 5G hype.

At the end, the macro economic issues related to Huawei and national security will help O-RAN vendors and let’s hope that this will bring new projects and opportunities at this market.

Well, Open RAN is a big mistery…not much information.
Don’t know if there will be jobs for us in Open RAN.
But this is the future and nobody could stop it.

We have to learn Open RAN.

++ cloud :cloud:

Yes… So far, not much info about it… products available, parameters, KPIs, etc.

I guess we will, for some time haha while RAN optimization is still nedded… but it is always good to start learning some programming, or refreshing the uni times.

For me O-RAN is another smokescreen.

CAPEX / OPEX may be decreased initially, but operationally it will be a big headache for network operation, if the big MNOs use several providers (Altiostar, Mavenir, Parallel, NEC, etc)…

Imagine having that much of providers the new complexity on the network.

Currently part of this network (Rakuten) and blame game is started in O-RAN, very difficult to troubleshoot any issue.

How complex that would be?
Imagine an OSS with 5 or 6 vendors providers showing different alarms, different KPIs and counters, different ways on their configurations (Transmission, IP routing, etc).

It will be per area.
Each area will have a different vendor.
Equipment can be swapped.
One with another.
Without any issue in open RAN.

Yes for sure… but at the end the benefit of O-RAN will not exist… for each area a specific vendor.
That is somehow our current situation.

User interfaces will be very similar if not identic. MNOs will ask about this for sure.
MNOs are ruling the open RAN community.
They are dictating the rules, the direction and the milestones to be achieved.

They should be thinking on how to reduce the new complexity.

New players are lagging to provide full flash feature support mostly they are in development phase only
Hard to surpass 150 years old company.

Open RAN is the new way to introduce competition on the traditional manufacturers (E//, Huawei, Nokia, ZTE, Samsung), generating benefits for the MNOs in order to decrease HW / SW prices.
This is a way to leverage their negotiation power.

Not exactly.

Last year Vodafone stated they expect to swap teh whole Europe (150000 enodeBs) with open RAN if the price of an eNodeB from open RAN would be around 1000 Euro.

Of course list of features is not yet complete and we cannot expect openRAN players to have features and capacity of traditional vendors, for now.

But in time this will happen.

I know field reality but Rakuten network is exception.
Now NEC alongwith Fujitsu new players for RAN.

Nec/ Fujitsu are already playing in 5G for about 3/4 years.
Very close to NTT, which is an operator that has very high quality standards.

After winning big 5G deals, still some companies share going down.

Like this for nokia…

Surprised situation.
