Bandwidth and Inter-compatibility

  • Clocking and synchronization challenges between the O-RU and O-DU — this link is highly latency-sensitive.
  • Due to packet bottlenecking on the DU side, TTI stretches are eventually observed.

Interoperability Issues

  • Vendors such as Nokia and Ericsson are reluctant to face these challenges directly.
  • Otherwise, their proprietary T-RAN solutions and OEM vendors risk significant financial losses.

It seems that both Mavenir and Radisys are no longer in the Open RAN competition.

They are still operating, but have laid off a significant portion of their employees. They continue to work with Dish, JMA, Charter, and Deutsche Telekom.

  • Another major challenge involves Intel and AMD CPUs - now the industry is waiting for NVIDIA to step in with their GPUs.

Open RAN has great potential, but its adoption has been slower than expected due to several practical challenges:

  • Multi-vendor integration is complex and requires extensive interoperability testing.

  • Performance consistency, especially for features like Massive MIMO and beamforming, is still maturing in some deployments.

  • Operational complexity increases with software management, troubleshooting, and lifecycle maintenance across multiple vendors.

  • Higher integration and validation costs can reduce the expected TCO benefits.

  • Limited large-scale brownfield deployments make many operators cautious about widespread adoption.

Open RAN isn’t a failed concept- it’s a long-term evolution. As the ecosystem matures and automation improves, adoption is expected to grow, particularly where flexibility and vendor diversity offer clear business value.
