What Telecom Engineers See Beyond 5G Signal Bars

When your phone shows full 5G signal, you may think:
“Network is perfect!” :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

But a Telecom Engineer starts asking:

:small_blue_diamond: What is the RSRP?
:small_blue_diamond: How good is the RSRQ?
:small_blue_diamond: What is the SINR?
:small_blue_diamond: Is the Cell Load high?
:small_blue_diamond: What is the Throughput?
:small_blue_diamond: Is there any Interference?
:small_blue_diamond: How are the Neighbor Cells behaving?
:small_blue_diamond: Is Handover working properly?

The same network.
The same tower.
The same phone.

But two completely different perspectives.

:light_bulb: That’s the difference between using a network and engineering a network.

And this is why telecom engineering is much more than just looking at signal bars.

Signal bars are only the starting point. For me, the first KPI depends on the symptom: RSRP for coverage, RSRQ/SINR for radio quality, and throughput for user experience. Then I correlate them with load, interference, mobility and counters. A good RF value by itself never proves a healthy cell.

Signal bars are the tip of the iceberg- RSRP tells coverage, RSRQ/SINR tell quality, throughput tells the actual user experience. I usually start with RSRP to rule out a coverage hole, then jump to SINR since most complaints are interference, not coverage and then throughput to confirm what the user is actually feeling. Cell load and handover behavior close out the picture.
