What is happening at ITU-R on 6G Radio Development?

After a year of extensive discussions, ITU-R has established a three-stage timeline for the development of 6G technology. The first stage, Stage 1, focuses on defining the vision for 6G technology, which will be completed in June 2023 before the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC-23). Following this, Stage 2 will involve establishing the requirements and evaluating the methodology, with a completion date set for 2026. The final stage, Stage 3, will involve developing the specifications and is scheduled to be completed in 2030.

ITU-R’s current main objective is to reach a consensus on the global vision for 6G technology. This involves identifying potential user application trends and emerging technology trends, as well as defining enhanced and brand-new usage scenarios and corresponding capabilities. Understanding the new spectrum needs is also a crucial aspect of this process.
