What is a gNB (gNodeB)?

gNodeB stands for “Next-Generation Node B” . It is a critical component of the 5G wireless network architecture. In 5G World , This is similar to Radio Station in BTS (2G) , NodeB (3G) , Evolved NodeB (4G) . gNodeB can also be deployed in a cloud-based infrastructure which supports in flexible and scalable network deployments

  • Sending and receiving radio signals to and from 5G Radio & 5G User devices ( like smartphones and M2M / IOT devices )

  • Have capabilities to support 5G networks higher data rates, lower latency, increased device density, and improved overall performance

  • Supports high-speed data transfer for applications such as ultra-high-definition video streaming, virtual reality, and augmented reality

  • Handling a large number of connected devices at the same time, allowing for efficient connectivity for IoT devices, smart cities, and industrial automation for mMTC devices

  • Supports Low latency and high reliability for mission-critical applications such as autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and industrial automation

  • Uses advanced antenna technologies for maximizing Spectral efficiency , Beamforming and MIMO

  • Since 5G Core supports both 4G & 5G Radio , There is need to introduce new type of eNB in 4G Radio Network : Ng-eNB to work with 5G Core

  • Ng-eNB allows users to connect to 5G core network using 4G radio interface (LTE RAN)
