Troubleshooting random LTE UE failures

If LTE UE is having a strange behavior like access or drop failures randomly without any clear reason (good RF levels, no congestion etc.);

And OSS KPI looking good;

And maybe some user complaints in the area;

Log into the eNB where the issue happened, perform multiple ping tests with a packet size of 1500 (1600 would be better) to the MME and the SGW.

In certain scenarios, eNB startups may behave abnormally despite no major alarms or noticeable fluctuations.

Key KPIs may start degrading, with counters for various cause codes increasing, such as access failures, handover failures, and high abnormal release rates.

A quick solution often involves resetting the nodes, which usually resolves the issue. However, detailed investigations often reveal that these problems stem from internal state machine errors within the eNB, typically linked to software-related issues.

Additionally, device interoperability and firmware updates are critical factors to consider.

In such cases, it’s essential to examine:

  • UE capability issues,
  • Single UE-specific problems,
  • Rogue UE behavior, and
  • General device-related issues.
