Troubleshooting Focus:

  • Prioritize External Alarms: When troubleshooting, address external alarms (power supply, high temperature, fiber break) before investigating internal alarms.
    Backup Considerations:
  • Backup NMS and NE Databases: Regularly back up the Network Management System (NMS) and Network Element (NE) databases.
  • Service Backup before Board Replacement: Before replacing a board, back up any service configurations that may be affected.
    Board Replacement Procedures:
  • Verify Alarms and Service Configuration: Before replacing a board, check current alarms and back up any associated service configurations.
  • Request Replacement Board with Specifications: When requesting a replacement board, specify its exact characteristics (frequency, protocols, rates, types).
  • Utilize 1+1 Protection for Planned Replacements: If replacing a working board in a 1+1 protected system, switch service to the standby unit from the NMS before replacement.
    Alarm Types:
  • Current vs. Historical Alarms: Current alarms are active and ongoing, while historical alarms have been acknowledged, cleared, and stored in a historical database.
    WDM System Looping:
  • Looping for Fault Location: WDM systems use loops (in-loop, out-loop, WDM side, client side) to locate faults. Loops can be set through fiber on-site or via the NMS.
    Board Resetting:
  • Prioritize Warm Resets: When resetting a board, attempt a warm reset first as it generally does not disrupt service. If necessary, perform a cold reset.
    Physical Looping Precautions:
  • Use Fixed Attenuators: When performing physical looping on a board, use fixed attenuators to prevent module damage from high optical power.
