Summary of Optical spectrum

  • Electro magnetic spectrum has multiple ranges like x ray, gamma ray, radio waves, ultra violet, infrared, visible light…

  • Light is one form of electro magnetic radiation.

  • Light wave consists of electric field and magnetic field 90 degree shifted.

  • Light waves used currently in multiple systems (mobile communication, utilities… ) to transport Traffic.

  • Light waves can transport traffic over ultra long distance with ultra high capacity.

  • Optical spectrum focus on ultra violet, infrared, visible light.

  • Visible light where we can see the colors, with in the range between 400 nm to 700 nm.

  • Optical communication based mainly on infrared.

  • We use infrared to transport Traffic with WDM technology, infrared has main 6 bands as defined by ITU.

  • ITU: International Telecommunication Union.

  • O , S , E , C , L , U starting from 1260 nm to 1675 nm.

  • Most common used bands are C & L bands for DWDM technology.

  • The reason is that C & L has the lowest attenuation coefficient and can efficiently transport traffic for ultra long distances.

  • C band has 3 types:

  1. Basic C band support 80 channel
  2. Extended C band support 96 channel
  3. Super C band support 120 channel
  • To increase the system capacity, we can use the below :
  1. Use mixed C & L
  2. Use flex grid
  3. Use higher modulation orders
  4. Use super C band
  • Modulation can be used QPSK, 16 QAM, PDM…
