Hello everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. I’m currently doing an internship focused on IMS technologies at ZTE, where I’m gaining exposure to core network functions and real-time operations.
As part of my internship, I would like to work on a final project that aligns with both my learning and my career goals in Telco Cloud and Core Network Security.
I’m proposing to develop a Network-based Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) tailored to IMS systems. The idea is to monitor SIP and Diameter traffic between IMS elements, detect anomalies like signaling floods, unauthorized requests, or unusual behavior, and flag/prevent potential threats.
My goals with this project:
- Apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world telecom context
- Build foundational skills in telco network security
- Show initiative and domain focus on my LinkedIn/CV
- Contribute something meaningful during my internship
My questions to the group:
- Is this project relevant and valuable for someone pursuing a career in Telco Cloud / Core Network / IMS / Security?
- Would such a project stand out or strengthen my resume and LinkedIn profile?
- Do you have suggestions on how to scope it technically, or resources I can explore?
Any ideas, feedback, or guidance would be truly appreciated. I’m open to refining the project and learning from your experience.
Thanks in advance!

1)scope is too broad narrow it down
2)Read about SBC-session boarder controller
3)read about SIP Firwall for SMS
4)Diameter can be used for detection most of the time
5)read about pcrf/pcf

Please could you detail the how this will be helpful
And a way to proceed please infact help me structure my idea
IMS is a kind of a closed network which has well definned entry points and exit points for certain functionalities and protocols to execute those functions.for an example SIP is session inititatin protocol .So which session is the subject here?It is the voice which is caried by another two protocols named RTP RTCP.to Athenticate,Authorise and charge(accounting) those RTP stream there is diameter another protocol.to comunicate the control protocol sip and the voice protocol RTP there is another set of protocols named MEGACO and H248.so like that. When you take IMS as a whole it seems to be a small network with 4 major nodes named SBG(PCSCF) SCSCF and MTAS but when you look closer it is doing all the work like EPC and 5GSA.Therefore you cannot define a singal solution to monitor or detect entire network since it has far too many components to control and protect as a sngle entity.Start reading and gather the material what I have given you is the current inmarket key security platforms which are attached with IMS .do by getting to know how those do itmight be good help to design your solution. Will supprt when ever you have an issue.thanks
Hello everyone,
I’m currently an intern at ZTE Cameroon, working primarily on IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technologies. I’m still an undergraduate student, with one year left before graduation (expected next year), and I’m eager to make the most of the time I have left during this internship.
From the beginning, I’ve been involved in IMS learning — focusing on its architecture, protocols, session control, and service delivery. Midway through, I was also assigned to MTN Cameroon’s NOC (Network Operations Center). While the NOC work is not directly IMS-related, it gave me valuable exposure to real-time telecom operations, helping me better understand the broader telecom infrastructure and incident management.
These experiences have strengthened my desire to specialize in Telco Cloud and Core Network technologies.
Now, with two months remaining, I want to:
- Leave a strong technical and professional impression on my IMS mentor
- Deepen my skills in IMS and telco core/cloud systems and most importantly, increase my chances of having this internship extended or even turning it into a job, despite still being an undergraduate
I’ve proposed a project on Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) for IMS, which I believe is both technical and relevant.
I’d appreciate your advice on:
- Is this project impactful and aligned with telco cloud career goals?
- Are there other project ideas that could make me stand out more?
- Tips to impress my mentor and build strong value in these last two months?
- How to best position myself now for a future in Telco Cloud?
Thank you!
