Purpose of Carrier Aggregation

Hi All.

Does VoLTE use Carrier Aggregation to maintain Quality of Service?

Or Carrier Aggregation is used only for high speed data requirements?

VoLTE is primarily designed for delivering voice services over 4G LTE networks. Carrier Aggregation (CA) is used to increase data speeds by combining multiple carriers or frequency bands. While CA is not typically used for maintaining the quality of voice services in VoLTE, it can indirectly benefit voice quality by freeing up capacity for data services.

Can the network send information to UE for CA to be turned OFF for a VoLTE call(low bandwidth) and CA turned ON for a high bandwidth user. How does the UE knows when to use CA and not use CA?

Yes, the network can send information to the UE for CA to be turned OFF for a VoLTE call (low bandwidth) and CA turned ON for a high bandwidth user. This can be done through signaling mechanisms, such as:

  • LTE Radio Resource Control (RRC) signaling
  • LTE MAC Control Element (CE) signaling

The UE knows when to use CA and not use CA based on the CA status information received from the network. For example, if the network sends a message instructing the UE to turn CA off, the UE will do so even if it is currently using CA.
