Open Gateway Is Moving Beyond Fraud APIs. What Comes Next?

GSMA Intelligence’s latest Open Gateway research suggests that the network API market is beginning to move into a more interesting phase.

The early conversation around Open Gateway was heavily focused on identity, authentication and fraud prevention. Those use cases made sense because they addressed immediate problems for banks, fintechs and digital platforms.

But the market is starting to broaden.

According to GSMA Intelligence’s H1 2026 assessment, Quality on Demand, location and device APIs are gaining traction, while aggregators are increasingly becoming a route through which developers and enterprises can access capabilities across multiple operators. Europe currently accounts for 34% of API deployments, while banking records a 73 Demand Index score in the research.

That shift could be significant.

The real opportunity for network APIs may not be selling one API at a time. It could be creating an abstraction layer that allows businesses to consume network capabilities without having to build separate integrations for every operator.

That is particularly relevant as telecom becomes more fragmented across MNOs, MVNOs, IoT providers, cloud platforms and digital service providers.

For operators and telecom platforms, this also creates an operational question.

If a business can request network capabilities through an API, the systems behind that API still need to manage subscribers, provisioning, billing, payments, usage and partner relationships reliably.

This is where API-first BSS/OSS architecture becomes increasingly important.

The interesting question now is not whether network APIs will exist.
