Network APIs Are Expanding. Is Telecom Ready for the Operational Complexity?

Network APIs are moving beyond being an industry concept.

GSMA’s latest Open Gateway research shows that use cases such as Quality on Demand, location and device APIs are gaining traction alongside the earlier focus on identity and fraud prevention. Aggregators are also becoming an increasingly important route for enterprises and developers to access capabilities across multiple operators.

That sounds like progress, and it is.

But there is another side to the story.

As more network capabilities become programmable, telecom operators and service providers will have to manage more API-driven interactions across customers, partners, networks and applications.

A simple API request might look straightforward from the outside.

Behind it, however, there can be subscriber validation, provisioning, charging, policy decisions, usage tracking and partner settlement.

This is where the operational architecture becomes important.

The growth of network APIs could eventually make telecom services easier for enterprises to consume, but it could also increase the number of real-time events that BSS and OSS environments need to process.

For MVNOs and digital service providers in particular, this creates an interesting opportunity. The ability to connect network capabilities with billing, subscriber management, payments and provisioning through a common API-driven environment could become increasingly important as connectivity becomes more programmable.
