Moving between Wi-Fi and 5G should feel smooth

Moving between Wi-Fi and 5G should feel smooth.

Thanks to N3IWF, it’s possible.

N3IWF is a non-3GPP interworking function.

It translates Wi-Fi into something 5G understands.

The process uses key interfaces and protocols:

:white_check_mark: NWu Interface:
Connects UE to N3IWF via Wi-Fi.

:white_check_mark: Y2 Interface:
Links access gateway and N3IWF.

:white_check_mark: N2 Interface:
Connects N3IWF to 5G AMF for session control.

For operators, it’s a big win.

Wi-Fi offloads reduce costs.

And 5G gets a broader reach.

But providing non-3GPP access isn’t simple.
:x: Untrusted networks demand strict safeguards.
:x: Wi-Fi often lags behind 5G in speed and reliability.
:x: Different standards increase coordination challenges.

Even so, the benefits are huge.

Blending old and new isn’t easy.

But it’s transformative.

This is where the future of 5G networks is headed.

Thanks for reading.
