The Universal Line Board is a vital element within Optical Transport Network (OTN) equipment. Its main function is to process and transmit multiple types of traffic services, making it a highly versatile component — hence the name universal.
What Makes It Universal?
This board is capable of handling:
- Virtual Circuits (VC)
- SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) traffic
- Packet-based services
- OTN (Optical Transport Network) traffic
In essence, it serves as a hybrid platform that supports various protocols, ensuring seamless integration and transport across optical networks.
How It Works in the Network
- Installed in OTN shelves, the universal line board receives services from different tributary boards:
- Packet tributary boards
- SDH tributary boards
- OTN inputs via cross-connection boards
- It performs a series of encapsulations:
- Maps the incoming service into an ODU (Optical Data Unit)
- Converts the ODU into an OTU (Optical Transport Unit)
- Finally, transforms the OTU into an OCH (Optical Channel / Carrier) for optical transmission
