Huawei RRU 3269

Does anybody know what the label 2T2R*2 refers to?

The term “2T2R*2” in the TxRx Mode column refers to how the RRU (Remote Radio Unit) handles transmitting and receiving signals.

Let’s break it down:

  • 2T means it has 2 Transmit (Tx) paths
  • 2R means it has 2 Receive (Rx) paths
So, 2T2R means the RRU can send and receive on two paths each — a setup known as 2x2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output).

Now, the *2” means this setup is duplicated.
In other words, this RRU has two separate 2T2R chains.

What does that mean in practice?

It means the RRU can support two sectors or two carriers, each running with 2x2 MIMO.
This setup is useful when you need:

  • Dual-band support
  • Carrier aggregation
  • Two cells or sectors being handled by the same unit

In LTE or 5G deployments, you might use this to:

  • Serve two different frequency bands, both with 2x2 MIMO
  • Or operate two sectors independently — each with its own 2T2R capability

So, when you see “2T2R*2”, it’s really saying:
You’ve got two sets of 2x2 MIMO packed into one RRU — boosting capacity and flexibility without needing extra hardware.

And if you’re into analogies:
Think of a radio tower like a DJ at a party.
A 2T2R*2 RRU is like a DJ with two full stereo systems — one for the main room, and one for the terrace.
Each can play different music (frequencies), but both are run from the same DJ booth (the RRU).
