5G Peak data rate (Throughput)

Peak data rate is the maximum data rate achieved by a cell (mobile station) in an ideal radio condition, when all the available radio resources are utilized without error. It is measured in bits per second (bps).

  • Peak data rate formula defined is applicable to both downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) transmissions with TDD (Time Division Duplex) and FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) techniques.

  • Spectrum (bandwidth) is one of the valuable and expensive resource allocated to telcos and it must be used judiciously in conjunction with right number of layers (MIMO), modulation, parameters with best possible radio conditions on field to achieve the maximum data rates/throughput.

Note:

  • Scaling factors are constant values:
    Alpha (DL/UL resource proportion) value is 1 (FDD) & 0.76 (TDD).
    f (mismatch in BB & RF), it is considered 1 (no mismatch)
  • J is number of carriers aggregated. Maximum 16 possible
  • Modulation considered: 256QAM
  • Coding rate is constant: 0.93
  • PRB for FR1:
    i). 270 for BW 50 MHz, SCS 15 kHz;
    ii). 273 for BW 100 MHz, SCS 30 kHz;
    iii). 135 for BW 100 MHz, SCS 60 kHz
  • PRB for FR2:
    i). 264 for BW 200 MHz, SCS 60 kHz;
    ii). 264 for BW 400 MHz, SCS 120 kHz
  • Overhead (OH): Resources occupied by signaling/guard band: In FR1, it ranges from 0.10 to 0.12; In FR2, it is 0.18
  • T is the OFDM symbol duration: 10^-3/(14*2^numerology)
  • TDD DL - frame structure considered is 6D:2U:2F
  • TDD UL – frame structure considered is 6U:2D:2F
