How Can a Telecom Student from Africa Land an Internship in a Big Company Like NOKIA?

Hi everyone,

What would be the best way for a final-year Telecommunications Engineering student based in Africa to secure an internship at a major telecom company like NOKIA?

Specifically for someone with:

  • Exposure to core networks (CS/PS, IMS) and signaling protocols
  • Hands-on experience in network operations, fault analysis, and KPI monitoring
  • Internships or project work with local operators or vendors (e.g., ZTE, CAMTEL, MTN)
  • A strong interest in mobile core, cloud, or transport domains

Would it be more effective to go through official portals, or should one try to reach out to employees or recruiters directly? Also, do certifications or project portfolios make a big difference?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Brayant,

Welcome to the forum! :waving_hand:t4:

Ericsson has a dedicated program for recent graduates. You can search for it directly on the Ericsson online career portal and filter the results by the country where you are located.

According to their website, Ericsson currently has offices in South Africa, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire.

From what I understand, previous experience is not required for these graduate programs — you just need to wait for the open enrollment opportunities in your area.

As for Nokia, I believe they follow a similar process.

For recent graduates, the most effective approach is to start by checking the official job portals (Ericsson or Nokia). If you don’t see any open positions, try to reach out directly to the nearest office. You can also use LinkedIn’s job search feature to explore more opportunities.

Best of luck with your job search!

Hello Jorge,
Thanks a lot for the warm welcome and for taking the time to share these valuable insights.

As a recent Telecommunications Engineering graduate based in Africa, I’m actively looking for internship or graduate program opportunities, especially in Core Networks and related fields.

Your explanation about Ericsson and Nokia’s processes is very helpful — I’ll make sure to explore their career portals and follow up with the local offices if needed.

Really appreciate your guidance!
