The ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) was established in 1992, in its mission to bridge the digital divide and fuel digital transformation. By leveraging the power of Information and Communication Technologies, ITU-D aims to boost economic prosperity, create jobs, develop digital skills, promote gender equality and diversity, support a sustainable and circular economy, and save lives.
ITU-D prioritizes those most in need, from individuals in the world’s Least Developed Countries to marginalized communities everywhere.
The framework which enables ITU-D to achieve its priorities is:
World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC), which sets strategies and objectives for telecommunication development. It also provides future direction and guidance for ITU-D.
The Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG), which reviews priorities, strategies, operations, and financial matters. It also advises the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) on the implementation of the World Telecommunication Development Conference Action Plans. It meets annually to discuss budget and operational plans.
There are two study groups in ITU-D. Study Group 1, Focuses on creating an enabling environment for meaningful connectivity while Study Group 2 focuses on driving digital transformation.
These groups examine crucial topics to support developing countries in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their specific development priorities.
