Difference Between 5G Icons: Black vs. White Background

Hello All.

Does anyone know the difference between these two 5G icons - one with a black background and the other with a white background?

They seem to appear randomly, but I’m sure there must be a specific reason behind it.

I think it has to do with the progress of the data session.

Yes, simply put, it indicates either idle mode or dedicated mode.

I’m not sure, but different operators may have different requirements for icons.
For example, both operators below support VoLTE, but each one has different icon requirements.

If it’s not related to session progress, you might want to check if it’s linked to different operators.

Which brand?

One icon indicates that the UE is in LTE cells that support only NSA anchor.

I think this might be correct.

This is on an Android S24 Ultra, with the operator Zain in KSA.

When the 5G logo, Data icon, and VoLTE logo are displayed on your phone, it indicates:

  1. Your device is connected to a 5G network, enabling fast internet speeds.
  2. Mobile data is active, meaning you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Voice calls are being handled via VoLTE, ensuring enhanced call quality.

Thanks! I was more curious about the different types of 5G logos.

In NSA (Non-Standalone) mode, the 5G network relies on an LTE anchor cell for control signaling while utilizing the 5G NR cell for data transmission. The 5G logo appears on the device as long as it remains connected to both the LTE anchor cell and the 5G NR carrier for data. If the 5G connection is lost or falls below the B1 threshold, the device remains connected to the LTE/VoLTE anchor cell.

In SA (Standalone) mode, the device connects directly to a 5G NR network, without depending on LTE for control signaling or anchoring.

In NSA mode, when it has a white background, it indicates that it is working with 5G data. When it has a black background, the mobile has only the ULI (Upper Layer Indicator) but does not have the 5G leg active.
