Is just a data call…

You won’t see any specifics about Whatsapp, that would go through the user plane.

True.

But from PGW how the traffic will deliver if it gets internet service back?

And communication between PGW to WhatsApp will be over the public IP of the assigned from operator?

The flow of such apps is like usual data consumption.

After you initiate the RRC/eRAB bearers, the app now send and receive data. After the session goes through inactive period (no data is being sent/received) the user will be in the inactive state (registered and idle and with TAC periodic updates) until you get/send some whatsapp messages, then the signaling restores the bearer (in all the previous steps you will have an active bearer with the PGW as a way of always-live-connection) this will save tremendous time in re-initiating the user-plane bearers.

To recap:

You will have regular data sessions.
Your phone won’t recognise it’s being used as a way of voice-calles through WhatsApp (if you decided to make calls) it’s an OTT (over the top service) which will have usual QCI and through the TFT (traffic flow template in the PCRF) there won’t be special treatment for this signal (nonGBR).

Your phone will be in the inactive state after the timer expiry.

The signalling will restore the connections of the user plane after MO/MT sessions.

Hi There.

Anyone have experienced issues with frequent reconnecting of whatsapp calls even in good radio conditions and on sites with no txn instabilities?

Yes, I have faced this issue… displaying reconnecting for 5 seconds and then gets back to normal.

One situation is when there is an incoming call on voice then it will display 5 seconds reconnecting.

Not this one, as it’s known.

Second situation is cell FACh in 3G.

Third situation is strong interference in DL like weak SINR.

Fourth situation is one UE at max TX power.

But it’s coming in IBS as well with good SINR.

Shortage in scheduling then…

Don’t forget that Whatsapp is non-GBR, whereas VoLTE is GBR.

Thanks.

Any workaround for it?

hmm… if cell is short in PRBs don’t know what can be done.

MU_MIMO is one solution.

Deploy MU-MIMO.

Like this there will be no more shortage of PRBs or any congestion issue.

Also try sharing more traffic with surrounding cells like this you will offload your serving cell.

Nope.

It’s not happening in only congested cells but randomly even in low traffic ones.

Probably not related to radio issue…

Enable User trace in OSS and also Drive Test UE with PCAPs and then you will find the reason.

With S1-U PCAP.
