9 hidden jobs of a 5G network

You tap an app. Behind that simple action, a 5G network has many jobs to coordinate.
⠀
This animation brings nine of those mechanisms onto one screen, each with its own moving example. Together, they show how a connection is found, established, managed and maintained.
⠀
◆ 1. Cell search
The phone detects synchronization signals to find and synchronize with a cell.
⠀
◆ 2. Random access
A preamble and network response begin the illustrated access exchange. The full procedure includes additional steps depending on the access type.
⠀
◆ 3. Registration
The phone’s registration request reaches the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) through the base station.
⠀
◆ 4. Authentication
A challenge-and-response exchange helps verify the subscriber. This forms part of registration; the subscriber’s secret key is not sent over the air.
⠀
◆ 5. Data-session setup
The Session Management Function (SMF) configures the User Plane Function (UPF), helping establish connectivity to a data network. User packets follow the user-plane path.
⠀
◆ 6. Packet scheduling
The base-station scheduler assigns radio resources to queued traffic. Watch packets leave the queue as the illustrative time-frequency grid fills.
⠀
◆ 7. Beam tracking
Beam management uses measurements and control to adjust the serving beam as conditions and user position change.
⠀
◆ 8. Handover
As the phone moves between cells, the serving-cell relationship changes. Real handover involves measurements, preparation and signalling beyond the simplified animation.
⠀
◆ 9. Power saving
Configured Discontinuous Reception (DRX) provides receive-monitoring gaps, helping the phone manage radio activity while remaining connected.
⠀
The nine panels show related mechanisms across a 5G standalone connection’s lifecycle. They are not nine consecutive steps, and every mechanism is not active continuously.
⠀
The flows, resource grid and timing are illustrative. Technical basis: 3GPP TS 38.300 and TS 23.502.
⠀
A useful way to understand 5G: follow the signals, the control decisions and the packets.
