Hi all,
We talk a lot about 5G speeds, but less about the strategy behind the network: what operators build, where, and why. Here is a simple view.
How a 5G network is built
- Spectrum: Low band gives wide coverage, mid band (e.g. 3.5 GHz) balances speed and coverage, and mmWave gives very high speed over short range.
- RAN: Towers and antennas where your phone connects. Massive MIMO and wider channels give 5G more capacity than 4G.
- Transport: The fiber or link behind the tower. If it is weak, even a great tower feels slow.
- Core: NSA uses the 4G core and launches faster. SA uses the 5G core and unlocks slicing and lower latency.
How 5G is actually used
- Mobile data: better speed and capacity in busy places. Works fine on NSA.
- FWA: home or office internet without fiber. One of the clearest revenue cases today.
- Private networks: reliable coverage for factories, ports and campuses. Usually best on SA.
- Low-latency services: automation and remote control need SA and good transport.
- IoT: many sensors, often on NB-IoT, LTE-M or RedCap.
