5G NSA x SA Smartphones

Up to now about 18 millions 5G smartphones were sold that are NSA compatible.
Will they have to be thrown away once 5G SA will be deployed?
What’s your opinion?

Definitely.
Very few of them even supports VoNR also.

OMG… this is a big issue…
I thought VoNR is available only with X60 of Qualcomm that is not yet available.

X55 supports VoNR as far I am aware.

Is there any network that has deployed VoNR?
Must be an SA one.

VoNR needs SA.
But huawei did the test last year.

Network operators probably needs to work in parallel SA +NSA mode for a while.

Samsung galaxy S20 launched recently supports SA mode
Houses SDM865 with X55 chipset

This is KT network migration plan from NSA to SA.
The mixture of NSA-SA will still keep NSA-only UE have 5G service normally.

5G allows users in NSA mode & SA mode

The BASIC difference between them is…

  1. NSA mode users always in dual connectivity both LTE & NR but in SA it is always one connectivity mode either or.
  2. For voice call in NSA mode it will fall back to EPC for Volte IMS but in SA it will running over VONR with best WBAMR codec.
  3. SA achieved with very low latency but NSA is always higher than SA latency.
  4. Handover intrism time is higher in NSA around 800 ms to 1sec but in SA it is around 300ms.
  5. NSA gives better coverage footprint than SA.
  6. SA support all telco vender equipment but NSA not
  7. SA support fast return during 4G-5G inter networking but NSA not.
  8. SA support blind & selective Target handover but NSA not.
