3 Vital DWDM Optics Concepts You Should Know

1. TDA (Tributary Disable Action)

TDA is a feature in WDM transponders that defines the action taken when a tributary port is disabled.

Possible actions include:

  • Sending a Local Fault signal
  • Shutting down the laser
  • Transmitting idle frames

A tributary port may be disabled for several reasons, such as:

  • The port being placed in a locked state
  • Hardware faults
  • Fiber or line issues

2. Administrative Status (Admin Status)

Admin status represents the configured state of a port in the NMS (Network Management System).

Common states include:

  • Locked
  • Unlocked
  • Maintenance

This status is manually configurable via the NMS.

  • Locked:
The port is not in service and does not transmit or receive optical signals.
  • Unlocked:
The port becomes active and starts emitting optical signals.

3. Operational Status

Operational status reflects the actual ability of the port to carry traffic.

Possible states:

  • Enabled
  • Disabled

This status cannot be manually set; it is only monitored.

  • Enabled:
The port is functioning correctly and can send/receive traffic.
  • Disabled:
Indicates a problem that requires troubleshooting.

Basic troubleshooting steps:

  1. Verify the port is unlocked (Admin Status)
  2. Check that the configuration is correct
  3. Inspect for hardware failures
  4. If necessary, perform a warm or cold card reset
  5. Use loopback testing to isolate the root cause
