What are main differences between mmWave and sub-6GHz?

Can you please enumerate the main differences between mmWave and sub-6GHz?

In 3GPP Rel-16 of 5G standard the considered spectrum is given in two parts:
Spectrum part FR1 - Frequency range 410 MHz – 7125 MHz (so called sub-6GHz)
Spectrum part FR2 - Frequency range 24250 MHz – 52600 MHz (so called mmWave)
mid-bands range from 3.4GHz to 6GHz and are not considered mmWave.

5G is the first system where frequencies higher than 6 GHz are taken into account.

One may pose the question: if the price is so exciting then why nobody used mmWaves previously in cellular systems?
One of the main reason is the changed physical conditions and transmission challenges. The five key factors are given below.

  • Enhanced path loss attenuation of mmWave
  • Significant reflection and transmission losses in the mmWave range
  • Diffraction and scattering consideration for mmWave
  • Precipitation and gas attenuation shows up in mmWave spectrum range
  • Foliage attenuation is significant in mmWave
