Telecom RAN Landscape

Is it?
Which release they fixed it?

The point is: all vendors are in danger!
Open RAN will chase them out in max 2 years…

Well in E\\ Side.
SE per TTI is available from release 19… but handled by internal SC.

MNOs are financing Open RAN more than anyone else.
For example VDF UK will deploy 2600 sites in UK of open RAN in next year.
Open RAN is lagging in 5G, but for 2G/3G/4G they already have the solution ready.
But not so many features like traditional vendors.
VDF even claimed they will swap out entire Europe (150K enodeBs) as soon as Open RAN is mature.
So there is pressure on all of Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, etc.
Orange claimed the same.
The target price for a enodeB of open RAN is 1K Euro.
So we all need to learn Open RAN which is not different than 3GPP.
It just that it brings more interfaces, a RIC, and split of DU and CU.
Once you know 3GPP params about 3G, 4G and 5G then all you have to do is to learn specific vendor parameters of Mavenir, ParallelWireless, Altiostar same like we know now params of Nokia Ericsson Huawei etc.
Ericsson and Nokia both are part fo open RAN and aiming to adapt their products.
But Huawei refused to do it so far.
But thinking the conglomeration of Huawei, they might be quick to produce open RAN products as well; when and if they will decide to do so.

I think Huawei will join to the Open RAN soon.
Ericsson and Nokia (and others) loose to match for Huawei.
And Open RAN is the best opportunity to this vendors grow again.

The telecommunications industry has reached a dead end and needs a paradigm shift. On the one hand the traffic demand is rising exponentially, while on the other, revenues become saturated and their increase is logarithmic. The traffic & revenues gap is constantly widening. Clearly, one cannot achieve a different outcome by applying the same method so, there is a need to change business models. Some of them, including those used on the Radio Access Network (RAN) market, are as obsolete as if they were designed in the Stone Age.

Open Ecosystems in Telecommunications - A Paradigm Shift

Any update for 2023? New predictions?

@Jairo_Sanz you are right, the added complexity will cause problems. “Finger pointing” among vendors may be one of them.

But I think this is a well-understood issue, and “the industry” is preparing for it. One way is to have sophisticated interoperability testing and compliance certification.

Think about how ubiquitous is WiFi. Partially that is because most wifi “just works”. Sure, there are exceptions. But mostly WiFi is m uch easier and almost as reliable as a wired connection.

This is the level Open RAN needs to attain. Any certified device is guaranteed to interoperate with any other certified device.

I can’t wait!

Hi friends… This discussion is old… and very good. :grinning:

But now we have one more ingredient: how will Artificial Intelligence affect the RAN Landscape?

Even this topic here can be summarized by AI ! :open_mouth:

Nokia and Ericsson are having a golden time in telecom. Huawei is struggling on new contracts in LATAM. O-RAN is another smokescreen. Open RAN is a big headache for network operation. 5G will be paid mostly from Indutry instead of common customers.
