5 Common Mistakes Freshers Make While Learning Telecom Protocols (Are You Making One?)

Hi everyone,

When I started learning LTE and 5G NR, I felt lost many times. Looking back, I noticed a few mistakes that almost every fresher makes. Sharing them here so that new learners can save some time.

1. Memorizing without understanding the “why”
Many of us remember names like RRC, NAS or MAC but never ask why they exist. If you know why a protocol is needed, you will never forget it.

2. Skipping the basics
Jumping directly to 5G NR without learning OFDM, modulation, and frame structure makes everything confusing. Strong basics make advanced topics easy.

3. Ignoring 3GPP specs
Notes and videos are good for starting, but the 3GPP specifications are the real source. Even reading one small section daily helps a lot.

4. Learning only theory, no call flows or traces
Theory feels easy until you see a real log. Practice reading call flows (attach, handover, RRC setup) and try to match them with real traces.

5. Mixing up LTE and 5G NR terms
Many terms look similar but work differently, for example, subframe vs slot, or EPC vs 5GC. Keep a small comparison table for yourself.

Learn one topic, draw it in your own words, and try to explain it to someone else. If you can explain it, you have understood it.

Now I would love to hear from you:
